Engineering Education for a Sustainable Future: Discovery Report
An essential report outlining the current state and key recommendations for embedding sustainability into the core of engineering education across Europe.

As the world confronts complex environmental and societal challenges, the role of engineering has never been more critical. The Engineering Education for a Sustainable Future (EESF) project, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, was created to better equip the next generation of engineers with the skills and mindset to drive sustainable change.
This foundational Discovery Report presents the results of an extensive investigation into the current state of sustainability in engineering education. It reveals that while progress has been made, implementation remains inconsistent and fragmented across Europe. The report provides a clear rationale for change and offers three core recommendations for educators and institutions:
Develop sustainability-oriented mindsets (systems thinking, multidisciplinarity, ethics).
Integrate comprehensive sustainability knowledge across curricula.
Train students in critical sustainability-related skills.
This report serves as a vital resource for the EESF consortium and the wider higher education community, providing the evidence base needed to develop practical tools and resources that will empower educators to train the sustainability-conscious engineers of tomorrow.
